Writing II: Paragraph development

The following paragraph is designed for those taking Writing II.  The 153-word paragraph includes at least one example of each of the following: MEAL plan, prepositional phrases, an appositive, restrictive relative clause, non-restrictive relative clause, cohesive devices (i.e., rheme-theme pattern, same theme-new rheme pattern, and sentence connectors), simple sentence, complex sentence, and compound sentence.

The English language profession offers educators, life-long learners, opportunities to grow when they recognize that such growth depends to a certain degree on technology.  For instance, English language educators who happen to work at the university level may develop a personal learning network (PLN) that allows them to extend their social network or personal connections beyond the institution where they teach.  A PLN also depends on the type of technology one uses to communicate with others.  Twitter, which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world, has helped establish many PLNs across the Internet.  As a PLN grows and becomes stronger, so too do the individuals who interact within that network.  Indeed, the English language profession is one that is in a constant state of change, and in order for appropriate changes to take place, administrators and language educators must work closely together so that improvements to higher student achievement may be realized.

On a separate piece of paper (or in Word), write your name and number one through six and explain each of the six sentences in terms of the concepts listed above: MEAL plan, appositives, etc.  Your explanation of each concept should include an example from the text above (in quotation marks) and should define each concept as well. If needed, click on the links above to review each of the concepts first before analyzing the text.  Once you have completed this task, upload your analysis to this blog by submitting a comment.

For those who were absent today, here are additional instructions:

    1. The first sentence is the main idea. The appositive is “life-long learners” because it is giving extra information between the sentences. It is a simple sentence with a relative clause. The relative clause is “when”. It also has a prepositional phrase “on technology” because it has a preposition and then a noun. The theme is “the English language profession”.
    2. The second sentence is the evidence. It has a sentence connector which is “for instance”. In this sentence the rheme becomes the theme. The theme is “English language educators”. It is a complex sentence because it has the connector “for instance”, and a dependent and independent clause.
    3. This is a simple sentence because it has no connectors, and it only has a subject and a verb. This has the pattern where the rheme becomes the new theme. The theme is “a PLN”. This sentence is the analyze part of the meal plan.
    4. This sentence has an appositive which is “which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world,” because it is giving extra information. It is a simple sentence with a relative clause. The relative clause is “which”. This sentence has a new theme which is “twitter” and the rheme is “has helped establish many PLNs across the Internet”. This is the evidence part of the MEAL plan.
    5. This sentence follows the pattern in which the rheme becomes the theme. The theme is “as a PLN grows” It is a compound sentence because it has a fanboy which is so and a relative clause that is who. This is the analyze part of the MEAL plan.
    6. This is a complex sentence, it has a dependent and an independent clause. It has a sentence connector that is “Indeed”. This is the link part of the MEAL plan. It has an appositive that is “in order for appropriate changes to take place”

    1. The first phrase is a main idea, it is a complex sentence because it has a subordinating conjunction “when”, also it has an appositive “life-long learners”, a restrictive relative clause “that such growth depends to a certain degree on technology”, it is restrictive because if it is removed the sentence does not make sense. It has also a prepositional phrase: “on technology”, and the phrase follows the Rheme-Theme pattern.

    2. The second phrase is evidence, it is giving examples. It is a complex sentence because it has a subordinating conjunction “where”, also it has two restrictive clauses: “who happen to work at the university level” and “That allows them to extend their social network or personal connections beyond the institution”. It has a sentence connector “For instance” and a prepositional phrase “at the university”. The phrase is formed by Rheme-theme pattern: the prior rheme “educators” became in the theme of this sentence “English language educators”.

    3. The third phrase is a simple sentence, it is evidence. Also, this phrase has prepositional phrases “on the type”, “of technology”. It does not have any appositive, restrictive relative clause, or non-restrictive relative clause. It follows the Rheme-theme pattern: the prior rheme “personal learning network (PLN)” became in the theme of this sentence “A PLN also depends…”

    4. It is a simple sentence with a non-restrictive relative clause. It is acting as analyze because it is analyzing “Twitter” that is a personal network mentioned on the second phrase has helped establish many PLNs across the Internet”. The non- restrictive relative clause is: “which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world”. The sentence has a prepositional phrase: “across the internet”. The sentence follows the same theme-new rheme pattern: the sentence keeps the prior theme “A PLN also depends…” as “Twitter” in this sentence, and a new rheme was added “has helped establish many PLNs across the Internet.”

    5. It is a compound sentence because it has a coordinating conjunction “so”. It is acting as analyze because is analyzing the idea from the sentence three because is mentioning the effects to interact and communicate with others. The sentence has a restrictive relative clause: “who interact within that network” and a prepositional phrase: “within that network”. It follows the Rheme-theme pattern: the prior rheme “many PLNs across” became in the theme of this sentence “As a PLN grows”.

    6. It is the link of the paragraph. It is complex sentence because it has a subordinating conjunction too:”so that”. It has a sentence connector: “Indeed”. It has a restrictive relative clause: “that is in a constant state of change.it also has an appositive “and in order for appropriate changes to take place” Really this last sentence was very confusing for me.

    1. This phrase is main idea, complex sentence (subordinate conjunctions “when”), it has a new theme (The English language profession) new rheme patter (offers educators, life-long learners, opportunities to grow), restrictive relative clause (that such growth depends to a certain degree on technology.

    2. This is the evidence of the paragraph, sentence connector (For instance). The rheme of the first sentence is now the theme (English language educator) and the rheme is new (may develop a personal learning network) It is a complex sentence (subordinate conjunctions “where”), it has two non-restrictive relative clauses (1 who happen to work at the university level. 2 that allows them to extend their social network or personal connections beyond the institution), also it have a prepositional phrase (at the university).

    3. This is analyze of the paragraph, it is a simple sentence, the rheme of the second sentence is now the theme (A PLN) and the rest of the sentence is a new rheme (also depends on the type of technology one uses to communicate with others.). This sentence has a prepositional phrase (on the type)

    4. This is an evidence sentence, had a non restrictive relative clause (which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world) it is a simple sentence. The theme (Twitter) is new, and is the same rheme of the third sentence (has helped establish many PLNs across the Internet.).
    5. It is an analyze sentence, it is a compound (Coordinating conjunctions “So”), it has a restrictive relative clause (who interact within that network). There is the same theme that is in third sentence (As a PLN), and it is a new rheme (grows and becomes stronger)

    6. This is the link. It is a complex sentence (“So that”); it sentences has a restrictive relative clause (that is in a constant state of change), it has an appositive (and in order for appropriate changes to take place), it is using an sentence connector (Indeed). It is using the same theme that the fifth sentence (the English language profession) and a new rheme (is one that is in a constant state of change). Also it has a prepositional phrase (in order).

    1. - This is a topic sentence. It is a complex sentence because it has a main clause and a subordinate clause. In addition, it has the connector “when” which is used in complex sentences. This sentence also has a prepositional phrase: “on technology”. A prepositional phrase contains a preposition and an object. This sentence also has an appositive “life-long learners” because it is giving extra information, and that is what appositives do. The theme is: “The English language profession.”

    2. - This sentence is evidence from the paragraph. The evidence shows examples and details, so this statement is supported by the phrase or connector: “For instance”. This sentence contains a restrictive relative clause: “who happen to work at the university level”. A relative clause is indicated by a relative pronoun at the start of the clause. This sentence is a complex sentence, and it is using the connector “where”. The sentence also has a prepositional phrase: “at the university”. The rheme from the last sentence is the theme in this sentence “English language educators”.

    3. - This is a simple sentence since it just has a subject and a verb. Here the rheme turns into the theme: “A personal learning network”. It has a prepositional phrase “on the type of technology”. This sentence is the analyze from the previous sentence.

    4. - This sentence is a simple sentence, but it has a non-restrictive relative clause: “which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world”. This sentence is evidence. This sentence uses the same theme from the previous sentence: “Personal learning network”.

    5. - This is a complex sentence, and it uses the connector “As” at the beginning. This is the analyze. It has a restrictive relative clause: “who interact within that network. This sentence uses the same theme from the previous one: “Personal learning network”.

    6. - This is a complex sentence, and it is using the connector: “so that”. This sentence has a restrictive relative clause: “that is in a constant state of change”. It also has an appositive: “and in order for appropriate changes to take place”. The sentence has a sentence connector: “Indeed”. It is the link of the paragraph.

    1. This sentence is the Main idea of the MEAL Plan. The prepositional phrase is “on technology”. The appositive is “life-long learners” because is extra information. Also the restrictive relative clause “that such growth depends to a certain degree on technology” can’t be deleted because the sentence would be incomplete. It is a complex sentence because it has an independent clause and a dependent clause with the subordinate conjunction “when”.
    2. This sentence is the Evidence because it is giving an example of the first sentence. The prepositional phrase is “at the university level” because first is the preposition and then the noun or object. It has two restrictive clauses because it has the phrases “who happen to work at the university level” and “that allows them to extend their social network or personal connections beyond…” It follows the pattern of rheme-theme because the past rheme in the last sentence “educators” is the theme here (“English language educators”). The sentence connector is “For instance”, and the subordinating conjunction “where” makes it a complex sentence.
    3. This sentence is evidence because still giving an example. The prepositional phrase is “on the type of technology” because it has the preposition first and then the object. The last phrase “personal learning network…” is the theme of “a PNL also depends on the type of techonolgy” so it has the rheme-theme pattern. It is a simple sentence because it only has a subject and a predicate.
    4. This sentence is Analyzing because it is talking about “Twitter” already mentioned in the first Evidence phrase “learning network PNL”. The prepositional phrase is “across the Internet” and the non-restrictive clause is “which is becoming more ubiquitous…” . So the sentence has the same theme-new rheme pattern because the last phrase “A PNL” goes with “Twitter” in this phrase, and the new rheme is “has helped establish many…” It is a simple sentence because it only has a subject and a predicate.
    5. This sentence is Analyzing with the three phrase when it talks about the use of technology and its consequences when someone use it. The prepositional phrase is “within that network” because it has the preposition followed by the object. The restrictive relative clause is “who interact within that network”. The sentence has the rheme-theme pattern because the last rheme “many PNL across” is the theme “As a PNL grows” here. The sentence is compound because the coordinating conjunction “so”.
    6. The final sentence is the Link because it opens the possibility to start another paragraph. The prepositional phrases are “in a constant state of change” and “for appropriate changes”. The appositive is “and in order for appropriate changes to take place”. The restrictive relative clause is “that is in a constant state of change”. It follows the rheme-theme pattern because it is talking about “the English proffesion”. The sentence connector is “Indeed”. It is a complex phrase because is has the subordinating conjunction “so”.

    1. It is the topic sentence because it says what the paragraph is going to talk about. It is using the subordinating conjunction “when” that is way it is a complex sentence. The appositive is “life-long learners” because it is extra information. Also, it has a prepositional phrase “on technology”. The theme is “The English language profession”.

    2. It is a complex sentence because it has the sentence connector “for instance”. It is the evidence of the MEAL plan. It has a restrictive clause which is “who happen to work at the university level”. The prepositional phrase is “at the university”. The rheme is “English language educators”.

    3. This sentence is simple because it has a subject and a verb. It has a prepositional phrase which is “on the type”. The theme is “A PLN” and the rest of the sentence is the rheme.

    4. It is a simple sentence and it has a non-restrictive relative clause “, which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world”. It is the evidence of the MEAL plan.

    5. This sentence is the analyze of the MEAL plan and it is a simple sentence. It has a restrictive relative clause “individuals who interact within that network”.

    6. It is the link of the MEAL plan and it is a complex sentence. It is using the connector “indeed”. It has an appositive which is “and in order for appropriate changes to take place”. Also, it has a restrictive relative clause “that is in a constant state of change”.

    1. This sentence is the main idea or topic sentence of the paragraph. It’s a complex sentence (the sentence has a subordinating conjunction). The first sentence has an appositive, which is “life-long learners” because it is renaming the subject of the sentence.

    2. The second sentence is simple sentence and obviously is the evidence of the paragraph. The sentence uses a restrictive relative clause, which is “who happen to work at the university” because it has no commas. Also it uses a prepositional phrase, because it says “beyond the institution”.

    3. Third sentence is acting as analyze, it just has a verb so it is simple sentence. The rheme becomes into a new theme because the prior rheme “personal learning network (PLN)” turns in the theme of this sentence. It has a prepositional phrase, which is “on the type”.

    4. The sentence is acting analyze of the paragraph. It sentence uses a Non restrictive relative clause, which is “which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world” and I knew this because every non restrictive relative clause have commas. This sentence is following the theme-rheme pattern.

    5. This sentence is a compound sentence. It sentence does not have a sentence connector but the sentence has a comma. It has a non restrictive relative clause, which is “who interact”. As a PLN grows and becomes stronger, so too do the individuals who interact within that network.

    6. This sentence is the link of the paragraph; it is supposed that this sentence links to the next paragraph. It has a sentence connector “Indeed. The sentence uses a restrictive relative clause. Which is “that is in a constant state of change”. Also, the sentence has an appositive, which is “and in order for appropriate changes to take place”

    1. This is the main idea of the paragraph, also called the topic sentence. This sentence is a simple sentence because we have just one principal verb with a restrictive clause “when they recognize …”. Also the sentence contains an appositive “lifelong learners”. The prepositional phrase appears when it says “on technology” on=preposition, technology=prep. Pronoun. The phrase “The English language profession” is the theme.

    2. - This sentence is part of the Evidence because it mentions new information also this sentence mentions a prepositional phrase “at the university” at=preposition, the university= prepositional pronoun. It has a restrictive relative clause “who happen…” “where they teach…”. The pattern of this sentence is rheme and theme because first comes “English language educators (rheme)”. This is a complex sentence because it uses “for instance”.

    3. - In this sentence we analyze the past sentence. It mentions the prepositional phrase “on the type” on= preposition, the type=prepositional pronoun. It is a kind of the Rheme-theme pattern “a PLN also depends (rheme)”. This sentence is simple because it has just a main subject and a main verb and it does not use any connector.

    4. - This fourth sentence is an Evidence sentence because it is giving us some details. The prepositional phrase is “around the world” around=preposition, the world=prepositional pronoun. The non-restrictive relative clause appears in “, which is becoming…,” The sentence has a same theme-new rheme pattern because “Twitter (theme)” and “many PLNs (rheme)”. This sentence is simple because it does not have any connector.

    5. - The fifth sentence is Analyze because it is giving details about something. The prepositional phrase is “within that network” within=preposition, that network=prepositional pronoun. The restrictive relative clause is “who interact…” the sentence uses the same theme-new rheme pattern “as a PLN… (theme)” and “the individuals… (rheme)” and it is a compound sentence because it is using “, so too do”

    6. - Always the last sentence is a link because it is mentioning another topic “…higher student achievement…” the appositive is “and in order to take…” and also it contains a restrictive relative clause “that is in constant state…” and the it uses a same theme-new rheme pattern “Indeed, the English language profession is one that is in a constant state of change, and in order for appropriate changes to take place, (theme)” and “administrators and language educators must work closely together so that improvements to higher student achievement may be realized.(rheme)” The prepositional phrase is “in a contrast state” in= preposition, a contrast state=prepositional pronoun. This sentence is complex because it is using “so that improvements”.

1.This phrase is the main idea of the MEAL plan, It has an appositive: “life-long learners” because it give us extra information. It has a restrictive relative clause: (when they recognize…) is restrictive because it doesn't have commas at the beginning nor end of the relative clause. This phrase has a prepositional phrase: (on technology) because it has a preposition and after a noun.
This clause is a complex sentence with a restrictive relative clause.
The theme is (The English language profession) and the rheme is (offers educators, life-long learners, opportunities to grow)

The below phrase is connected with the last one, for a rheme-theme pattern

    2. This phrase is the evidence of the MEAL plan, It has a connector (For instance), Its theme is (English language educators) because the rheme was become the theme, It has 3 restrictive relative pronoun ( who happen to work) is restricive because doesn't have commas, (that allows them) because it doesn't have commas either and ( where they teach) for the same reason that it doen't have commas. It has a prepositional phrase ( at the university level) because "at" is the preposition and "the university level" is the noun. It has an appositive (PLN) is the extra information of personal learning network. The theme is PLN..( that allows them....).
And this sentence is complex beacuse has subordinating conduction (for, instance).

The second third is connected with the second one, for a rheme theme pattern.

    3. A PLN also depends on the type of technology one uses to communicate with others.
It is other evidence of the MEAL plan. It contains prepositional phrases (on the type), (of technology) and (with others) because they have preposition and then noun. Theme is (A PNL) and the rheme ( also depends ...).
It is simple sentence because has a subject,a verb and object also it does not have connectors.

The below clause is connected with the last one by same theme-new rheme pattern.

    4. This is the part of analysis of the MEAL plan because it is going to analyze the last evidences. It has a non-restrictive relative clause: (, which is becoming more..) is non restrictive because it has commas and their information does not modify the clause. It has prepositional phrases: (around the world), ( across the Internet). the theme is (Twitter) and the rheme is (which is becoming...). It is a simple sentence with a relative clause (non-restrictive)

The following sentence is connected with the last one for same theme-new rheme pattern. theme of fourth phrase ( many PLNs across the Internet), theme of the fifth sentence ( As a PLN).

    5. This is the other part of the analysis of the MEAL plan because it is analyzing the evidence ( Twitter has helped PLNs across the Internet) have a restrictive relative clause( who interact ...) also this sentence is compound because is connected by a coordinating conjunction (so too do the...). this contains prepositional phrase: (within that network) because has a preposition and a noun.

The below phrase is connected with the fifth sentence using a sentence connector.

    6. It is the link the last part of the MEAL plan. It has a connector (Indeed). It has prepositional phrases: (in a constant state),(of language educators), (for appropiate..).It has a compund-complex sentence because has coordinating conjuction and subordiating conjuction. Theme is (the English language profession) and the rheme (is one that is in...)

    1. This first sentence is the main idea of the whole paragraph. It is a complex sentence because it has two clauses, one independent clause and one subordinate clause with the subordinate connector “when”. The sentence has three prepositional phrases such as “to grow”, “to a certain degree”, “on technology” because they have a preposition and an object. In the sentence appears only one restrictive relative clause “that such growth depends to a certain degree on technology” it is a restrictive relative clause because it does not have commas, and it is necessary to understand the sentence. The sentence follows the rheme-theme pattern, the rheme is the clause “The English language profession offers educators, life-long learners, opportunities to grow” and the theme is the clause “they recognize that such growth depends to a certain degree on technology”.

    2. The second sentence is the evidence so that it shows details and examples of the main idea, and it is show with the prepositional phrase “For instance”. It is a complex sentence because it has two clauses, the first clause is independent clause, and the second sentence is subordinate clause because it has the subordinating connector “where”. It has many prepositional phrases such as “for instance”, “to work”, “at the university”, among others. In the sentence appears two restrictive relative clauses “who happen to work at the university level may develop a personal learning network (PLN)” and “that allows them to extend their social network or personal connections beyond the institution”. The sentence follows the Rheme-theme pattern: the rheme “educators” became in the theme of this sentence “English language educators”.

    3. The third sentence is a simple sentence so that it only has one clause with a subject and a verb, and it is part of the evidence because it is giving more details and examples about the main idea. It has prepositional phrases such as “on the type”, “of technology”, “to communicate”, and “with others”. The sentence does not have any appositive, restrictive relative clause, or non-restrictive relative clause. It continues following the rheme-theme pattern. The rheme “personal learning network (PLN)” became in the theme of this sentence “A PLN also depends”.

    4. This sentence is analyze because it is using WH questions, and also it is analyzing, comparing, and contrasting Twitter that is a personal network that has been mentioned in the second phrase. This sentence is a simple sentence, because it only has the subject “Twitter” and the verb “has helped”. The sentence has a non-restrictive relative clause “which is becoming more ubiquitous among educators around the world” because it is between comas, and without this information we can understand the clause. The sentence has prepositional phrases such as “around the world”, “across the Internet”, and “among the educators”. The sentence adopts the rheme- theme pattern. The theme is “A PLN also depends” but now is better now as “Twitter” in this sentence, and the rheme is “has helped establish many PLNs across the Internet.”

    5. The fifth sentence is part of the analyzing because it is examining the idea from the sentence number three. It is a compound sentence so that it has two independent clauses joining for a coordinating conjunction that in this case the conjunction is “so”. The sentence has a restrictive relative clause “who interact within that network”. It has the prepositional phrase “within that network. It keeps the rheme-theme pattern. The rheme “many PLNs across” became in the theme of this sentence “As a PLN grows”.

    6. The last sentence is the link of the paragraph. We can find a sentence connector “Indeed” which is situated at the beginning of the sentence. It is a compound-complex sentence because it has two independent clauses “the English language profession is one that is in a constant state of change” and “in order for appropriate changes to take place, administrators and language educators must work closely together” joining for the coordinating conjunction “and”, but also it has a subordinated clause with the subordinate conjunction “so that”. The sentence has a restrictive relative clause “that is in a constant state of change”, and it also has an appositive “and in order for appropriate changes to take place”. It has prepositional phrases such as “for appropriate”, “to take place”, and “to higher”.
